Click Away: a photography conference for creatives and content creators

Photography conferences are an amazing way to develop your skills, find new inspiration, and network with like-minded people. The Click Away conference is a great option if you are looking for ways to broaden your photography experience and business acumen.

Photography conferences have played an important role in my growth as an artist over the years. I have never strayed from it without renewed inspiration and motivation. They have often put me in contact with people who have made a difference in my art or my career and have given rise to new directions in my work. Accordingly, I always recommend the lectures to anyone looking to seriously improve their photography in a number of capacities. Whatever type of photography you do, there is probably a photography focused conference for you. I recently had the chance to chat with Deven Travelstead, the Events Director of Click & Company, the company behind the Click Away photography conference, to learn more about their particular conference.

History of the Conference

The Click community was originally created under the name Clickin Moms and was simply an online resource and ultimately a community. The founders wanted a place where women could come and cultivate their love of photography, in part because of the predominance of men in the industry. Then, in 2010, they opened a school, offering a variety of courses to students of different levels. They expanded further in 2012 by creating a magazine.

After all of this, they realized that something was missing. Leaders felt that a physical in-person event would strengthen the community, allowing them to nurture and inspire even more than they have done online so far. They recognized how important the in-person connection can be and started the Click Away conference in 2014. I asked Deven what made their conference different and useful, and she explained that:

Click Away is a chance to free ourselves from our creative slumps, the limits that our daily lives can impose on us and the expectations of others. It’s a chance to unleash our creative powers. Our goal is for conversations, classes, and exhibitions to truly permeate all aspects of your artistic personality so that you let Click Away think about your art in an exciting new way, ready to shoot more, experience more, and learn More .

Due to all the other offerings in the Click community, they already had connections within the photography industry which allowed them to create a strong first conference and have thousands of attendees. Since 2014, the conference has been held in a different city every year, with the last two years being only remote due to the pandemic. In 2022, July 8-10, they will bring back the in-person conference, which will be held in Chicago.

One of the most valuable aspects of any conference, in my opinion, is the people you meet. Networking is important, yes, but you also usually make real friendships at events like this. Considering the reason the conference started, it’s exceptionally clear that community and connection are key parts of the Click Away conference. Deven told me that one of the mantras of the conference is that you can come alone, but you will not go alone. It can be intimidating to attend a conference if you don’t know someone else, but the Click community even helps people navigate their way. They have a Facebook group for those in attendance to log in before the conference even starts, helping people feel a little more comfortable and connected before they arrive. This Facebook group is also here to help you find rooms to share and transport sharing.

Conference offers

The Click Away conference course and event offerings are incredibly extensive. Over the three days of the conference, they cover everything from basic and introductory photography courses to more advanced options and even extremely genre-specific courses like underwater photography and working with instant film. They also have plenty of options for business related sessions and even social media focused courses covering topics like using Instagram Reels and Tik-Tok. Classes also range from lecture-style sessions to fully hands-on options.

While most of the classes focus on the bread and butter of the Click community, family, and lifestyle photographers, there are plenty of classes to keep you busy whether your focus is on a different genre or even if you are serious about it. are simply an amateur. When I asked Deven what types of photographers would benefit the most from the conference, she replied:

Whether you are pursuing photography as a professional business, or using the camera as an extension of your voice, or simply having to create something beautiful, we want you to literally leave the event, Clicking Away.

Beyond the courses, there will also be a few networking events and nights, review offerings, and a vendor showcase. In the past, they have also offered equipment rental and equipment cleaning, but part of that remains to be determined at this point as they wait to assess the necessary COVID-19 protocols that may be in place by the summer. next.

Access to the conference

In terms of access, there are different levels of ticketing, allowing attendees to choose what suits their schedule and budget. You can even buy stand-alone tickets for individual lessons if that’s more convenient for you. Some events are only open to the Click Pro member-based community, but other than that the conference is open to anyone. It is not necessary to already be a member of the Click community to attend the conference and although the event is aimed at women, it is open to everyone. Deven told me:

We are committed to inclusion and diversity in all aspects of Click Away, including our range of instructors, the breadth of programming, and participants who have historically represented a wide range of interests, skills, and competencies. genres and perspectives from 50 states and dozens of countries. worldwide.
